Self-portraits at the Singapore Botanical Gardens_04.jpg

“…these plant portraits are somewhat disconnected from the landscape, shifting the attention to the individual plant specimens that may have long disappeared.”

Rodda started collecting postcards of the Singapore Botanic Gardens 10 years ago, and has amassed a collection of more than 250 postcards.

Looking through Rodda’s postcard collection of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Loh was intrigued by a selection of postcards from the late 1800s to about the 1920s that were not typical photographs of iconic areas of the Gardens such as the lake or bandstand, but portraits of plants, such as palms or aroids.

While the landscape photographs allow a comparison between the past and present views of the Gardens, these plant portraits are somewhat disconnected from the landscape, shifting the attention to the individual plant specimens that may have long disappeared.
